STABBING INVESTIGATION 08-13-15

On August 13, 2015 at about 4:00 am, Burbank Police Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of East Tujunga Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a male suffering from multiple stab wounds. The stabbing appears to have occurred in the area of Tujunga Avenue and Sunset Canyon. Burbank Fire Department Paramedics treated the victim and transported him to an area hospital. The injuries are not life threatening.

The Burbank Police Department has recently taken several reports in which UPS, FedEx and/or US Postal Service packages have been stolen from residential porches. FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION

On July 10, 2015, at about 6:00 pm, a collision involving a vehicle versus a pedestrian occurred at the intersection of Verdugo Ave and California St in the City of Burbank. The on-scene investigation revealed that an 80 year old male, identified as Manharlal Shah a resident of Burbank, was struck while crossing Verdugo Ave in a marked crosswalk. The driver of the vehicle was in the process of making a left turn from northbound California St to westbound Verdugo Ave when the collision ocurred.

HOME INVASION SUSPECT CHARGED - 07-17-15

As previously reported, on July 10, 2015, at approximately 8:30pm, Burbank Police began investigating a home invasion robbery in the 1000 block of Cornell Drive. As a result of the investigation, Lonnie Garcia, a 27 year old male from Pasadena, was arrested in connection with the home invasion. Garcia was on supervised release as part of California’s Realignment Program, known as AB109.

Beware of Faux Kidnapping Scam

The Burbank Police Department would like to warn the Burbank community about new phone scams that have been occurring in which victims are receiving threatening phone calls in an attempt to scam money from them. The Burbank Police Department has recently taken reports of citizens receiving phone calls, in which the caller tells them a close family member has been kidnapped, and will be killed unless a ransom is paid.

On July 10, 2015, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Burbank Police began investigating a home invasion robbery in the 1000 block of Cornell Drive. Investigators developed leads which led them to the City of Pasadena. The leads and investigatory work resulted in the arrest of a suspect in the home invasion robbery. The arrest took place Wednesday evening in the City of Pasadena.

ROBBERY/ARSON NEWS RELEASE 07-09-15

On Thursday, July 9, 2015, at about 8:50pm, the Burbank Police Department received a call of a robbery – just occurred at the Sevan Mini Market located at 1516 North San Fernando Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found the business was on fire. The officers made contact with the victim, who reported he’d been robbed by at least three suspects, with one or more being armed with a firearm.

Drug Take Back Event - 07-11-15

BUSD Employee Arrested on Sex Offenses

BPD Detectives investigated a report involving BHS Girls Volleyball Coach Kyle Roach. It is believed he sent numerous sexually related text message communications, and solicited nude photos from underage females. The investigation identified an additional victim, who said she had an ongoing sexual relationship with Roach while she was under 18. She is now an adult and no longer attends BHS. Roach was arrested on June 18. Filing of the case with the District Attorney's Office is pending.

 

Former BUSD Employee Arrested

Based on a tip, The Burbank Police Department conducted an investigation involving a former John Burroughs High School Employee who may have had an ongoing sexual relationship with a student. The investigation resulted in the arrest of 23 year old Clarke Surrey of Glendale on June 4th, 2015.

 

Flash Mob Car Gathering Planned for Burbank Empire Center

The Burbank Police Department has become aware of a “flash-mob” style meeting planned for June 16, 2015 at the Krispy Kreme located in the Burbank Empire Center. The Burbank Police Department will always respect and recognize the rights of individuals to peacefully and lawfully assemble. The Burbank Police Department will be fully deployed in the area to enforce all applicable laws, including those involving illegal engine/vehicle modifications.

Couple Arrested for Selling Marijuana to Juveniles

On May 26, 2015, Nicolas Corral (M/37) and Yolanda Corral-Cortes (F/44) of Burbank were arrested after Burbank Police Detectives watched them sell marijuana to a 16 year old boy. A search of their vehicle recovered marijuana, concentrated cannabis, cash, and contraband associated with drug sales. A search of the couple’s home yielded additional evidence and marijuana. Both were arrested and booked for marijuana sales.

Joint Crime Suppression Operation Yields Success

A recent analysis of crime trends revealed that property crimes have dominated the crime spectrum for the first half of 2015. Crime analysts across Burbank’s border in Los Angeles noticed similar trends. In an effort to address this issue, personnel of the Burbank Police Department joined with their LAPD colleagues in Operation Blue Knights IV. The main concept of the operation was to provide heavy deployment of police personnel, engaging in proactive enforcement on both sides of the border.

Telephone Fraud Advisal

The Burbank Police Department and other law enforcement agencies throughout the region have received reports of persons impersonating police officers, court officials, and other government entities, for the purpose of fraud. These scams often target elderly residents by telephone, and involve the perpetrator claiming that the subject owes back taxes, fines, or has outstanding arrest warrants, which can be resolved by mailing/wiring funds.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, designed to encourage all drivers and motorcyclists to “share the road” with each other. Motorcyclist fatalities decreased in 2013 to 4,668, accounting for 14 percent of total fatalities for the year. Safe riding practices and cooperation from all road users will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our nation’s highways. 

The national seat belt use rate is at 87 percent, which is good, but we can do better. The other 13 percent—an estimated 27.5 million people—still need to be reminded that seat belts save lives. In California, we do much better – our usage rate is over 97 percent! But that still leaves over a half million drivers and passengers totally at risk because they aren’t wearing seat belts.

Male Arrested After Shooting In Front Of Burbank Town Center Mall

On April 4, 2015, at approximately 1:25 a.m., Burbank Police Officers responded to an unknown problem in front of the Burbank Town Center Mall, located at 201 E. Magnolia Boulevard. When officers arrived they found two male victims with injuries. One victim had a single gunshot wound in his lower torso. Officers gave medical aid to the victim until arrival of the Burbank Fire Department.

News Release - Suspect In Stolen Vehicle Finally Surrenders

On February 17, 2015, at approximately 2:30 p.m., an officer working patrol received an alert of a stolen vehicle on the automated license plate reader system. On January 17, 2015, at about 4:05 pm, a male pedestrian was struck by a southbound Metrolink Train on the train tracks north of the Magnolia Boulevard Overpass in Burbank. The male was pronounced dead at the scene by Burbank Fire Department Paramedics. He was later identified as George Gregory Plitt Jr.

A 76-year-old female resident of Burbank was walking eastbound on Victory Boulevard crossing Hollywood Way when she was struck by a delivery van, driven by a 51-year-old male resident of Burbank. The driver of the delivery van was making a right-hand turn from southbound Hollywood Way to westbound Victory Boulevard.

BPD Investigating Death Outside the Joslyn Center

Today, at approximately 2:08 p.m. officers responded to the Joslyn Center (1300 block of West Olive Avenue) regarding a female down on the grass. When the officers arrived, they observed a female, who appeared to be in her 30’s, on the grass on the south side of the Joslyn Center. During the officers’ initial contact, the female did not show any signs of life, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

This evening, at approximately 7:42 p.m. the Burbank Police Department was made aware of threats made by a student, via Twitter, who attends John Burroughs High School. Burbank Police Officers immediately conducted a follow up investigation and contacted the individual at his residence in Burbank. RAPPER "TOO SHORT" ARRESTED AT THE BURBANK AIRPORT

On October 1, 2014 at about 145pm, Todd Anthony Shaw, more widely known as the rapper “Too Short,” was in the process of passing through a checkpoint at the Burbank Airport when a TSA Employee noticed a carryon bag passing through the scanner that contained a handgun. Mr. Shaw left the concourse without his belongings, via an exit door, before he could be detained.

DRUG TAKE BACK EVENT 09-27-14

On September 27, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Burbank Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 9th opportunity in three years to prevent medication abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

 

FATAL TAFFIC COLLISION INVOLVING METROLINK

On September 2, 2014, at approximately 1517 hours, officers responded to the area of Buena Vista Street and San Fernando Boulevard regarding a single vehicle collision with a Metrolink commuter train that was traveling southbound. Initial reports indicate a grey Toyota Camry, traveling southbound on Buena Vista Street, attempted to circumvent the activated railroad crossing arms when the vehicle was struck by the train.

Arsonist Arrested After Dumpster Fire Investigation

Burbank Fire Department personnel responded to two separate dumpster fires in the early evening hours of Monday, June 16, 2014. The dumpster fire locations were within one block of each other and were suspicious in nature. Burbank Fire Department and Police Department arson investigators conducted a thorough investigation over the next two days. As a result of their investigation, it was determined that both dumpster fires appeared to have been intentionally set.

Burbank Animal Shelter Competing In National ASPCA Grant Competition

Beginning June 1st, the Burbank Animal Shelter (BAS) will be 1 of 50 animal shelters nationwide to participate in the 5th and final ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The Burbank Animal Shelter is competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000.

The Air Support unit will have their helicopter here for the kids to sit in and view all of the instruments used to assist them in supporting the patrol force. In addition, the Mounted Unit, Traffic Unit, K-9, SWAT vehicles, Reserves, and Community Outreach.

Residents Enjoy Coffee WIth A Cop Event

On April 22, 2014, The Burbank Police Department COPS Bureau hosted their first Coffee with a Cop event. Coffee with a Cop is a community based policing program that is designed to establish relationships and trust between the community and the police. Priscilla’s Gourmet Coffee, located at 4150 Riverside Drive, was the first coffee house in Burbank where police officers and members of the community came together to ask questions, address concerns, and drink coffee.

 

Another Successful Tip-A-Cop Event

The Burbank Police Department would like to thank the community for attending the “Tip-A-Cop” event, held at the Claim Jumper Restaurant on Thursday, April 17, 2014. Burbank Police Officers, Cadets, and Explorers were in uniform and assisted the staff at the restaurant in serving food and waiting on tables. Through the “Tips” collected they were able to raise approximately $2,500.00 for Special Olympics.

 

JBHS Threats

On April 16, 2014 at approximately 7:45 PM, a teacher from John Burroughs High School came into the Burbank Police Department to report her concern over comments made by a 15 year old student earlier in the day during one her classes. The student apparently was upset over being disciplined and made some comments regarding people dying the following day.

Police Search For Shooting Suspect

On March 24, 2014, at approximately 1:35 a.m., Burbank Police Communications Center received several 911 calls regarding several gunshots heard, with a subsequent vehicle crash in the area of Alameda Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard. Officers arrived a short time later and located a red SUV with major collision damage and multiple bullet holes in the right rear area. The vehicle was abandoned and a crime scene was established.

 

Confirmed Case of Flea-Borne Typhus Fever

Recently, Vector Control of Los Angeles County confirmed a case of flea-borne typhus in Burbank. The case is the first reported one for 2014. The Burbank Animal Shelter is working with the Los Angeles County Vector Control to inform our residents with educational pamphlets and additional information on safety precautions. Endemic Typhus Fever (aka: Murine typhus or Flea-borne typhus) is a disease caused by a bacteria known as Rickettsia.

 

TIP A COP EVENT @ CLAIM JUMPER - APRIL 17, 2014 5:00 - 9:00 P.M.

Personnel from the Burbank Police Department are taking part in the annual “Tip a Cop” event at the Claim Jumper restaurant in Burbank on April 17, 2014, from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Police Officers in uniform will be on hand to assist the staff at the restaurant in serving food and waiting on tables.

 

Suspect Identified and Arrested For Stabbing Two Victims

Investigators identifed a suspect in this stabbing and he was arrested late Saturday evening. Both victims will survive On Saturday, March 15, 2014, at approximately 3:50 p.m., Burbank Police Department Communications received a 911 call regarding a stabbing that occurred in the 1000 block of East Angeleno Avenue. Officers and fire department paramedic personnel arrived and located two male adult victims, both in their early 20’s, suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Local Burglary Suspects Arrested, Property Recovered

Burbank residents experienced a recent rash of residential and garage burglaries. There have been fifteen reports, primarily of theft of power tools, computers, and sound equipment, in just the past three weeks. Through our investigation of these thefts and with the assistance of evidence recovered by our Forensic Specialists, a suspect was identified. An arrest warrant was obtained and Nicholas Caves, M/25, transient, was arrested by investigators late Monday afternoon.

Since January 5, 2014, the Burbank Police Department has responded to six robberies or attempted robberies of local businesses. There were no reported injuries related to these incidents, although in some instances, the suspect was reported to have brandished/referenced a weapon. Based on the description provided by victims and witnesses, the same subject was believed to have been responsible for these crimes.

The Burbank Animal Shelter has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation through the Holiday Wishes Grant Campaign. A Successful Bicycle Registration Event Saturday

On Saturday, January 11, 2014, the Burbank Police Department conducted its first Bicycle Registration Event on the Chandler Bike Path from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. During the course of the event, over 300 bicycles were registered by community members of all ages. The Burbank Police Department is establishing a database which will help return bicycles to their owners in the event they are ever lost or stolen.

Nationwide, thousands of stolen or lost bicycles are recovered, but many are never returned to their owners. Unfortunately, the BPD is a part of that statistic. Police Awarded Traffic Safety Grant For Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign

Burbank Police Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for an anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on Burbank roadways. Enforcement measures to combat impaired driving are coming as a result of a recent $32,400 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety to Burbank. The Burbank Police Department is dedicated to keeping our streets safe through both enforcement and education.

Recently, during the late morning and early afternoon hours, there have been a few attempted residential burglaries in the area.

We are advising residents to be aware that thieves target vehicles to steal catalytic converters for the value of recycling the precious metals within the catalytic converter. Burbank Police Receive National Award

On Tuesday, October 22nd, the Burbank Police Department Communications Center became only the second law enforcement agency in the State of California to receive certification from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The certification process included training and policy revisions meeting the best practice standards established by NCMEC. The certification has better prepared our dispatchers to handle these critical cases.

STOLEN URN FOUND & RETURNED TO FAMILY

On Monday, September 30, 2013, a gardener found an urn in some bushes outside an apartment building in the 800 block of South Sixth Street, in Burbank. The same day, in Glendale, a family reported to the Glendale Police Department that their vehicle had been broken into and one of the items stolen was an urn.

The Burbank Police Commissioners and the Police Administrative Staff invite you to join them for a community forum. The forum will be held on October 16, 2013, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Luther Burbank Middle School Auditorium at 3700 West Jeffries Avenue.

 

Multiple Fatality Auto Accident

On Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 4:13 a.m., Burbank Police received a call regarding a single vehicle accident on San Fernando Boulevard near the Scott Road off-ramp of the Golden State Freeway. On arrival, officers observed a Nissan sedan fully engulfed in flames against the freeway abutment. In addition, there was a small grass fire associated with the crash. An 18-year old female passenger, who escaped the burning vehicle, was transported to LA County Medical Center.

Tip A Cop Event October 15, 2013

Personnel from the Burbank Police Department are taking part in the annual “Tip a Cop” event at the Black Angus restaurant in Burbank on October 15, 2013. Police Officers in uniform will be on hand to assist the staff at the restaurant in serving food and waiting on tables.

 

Business Alert-ADA issues

It has come to the Police Department’s attention that individuals alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) have approached several Burbank businesses. A lawyer subsequently contacts the business to discuss settlement in-lieu of pursuing a civil case in court against the business.​

 

Motor Officers Achieve Honors In Recent Competition

On September 18, 2013, four members from the Burbank Police Department Motor Squad competed in the Orange County Traffic Officers Association’s “Top Gun” Motor Rodeo. This skill program draws approximately 250 motor officers from law enforcement agencies throughout California. Competitors were challenged with fast and slow timed cone patterns and the "top gun" finale, an elimination round competition.

Safety Tips Provided After Mountain Lion Sighting In Burbank Residential Area

On September 18, 2013, a mountain lion was observed in the 3300 block of Wedgewood. The mountain lion was observed running away from the area when the police arrived. This communication is intended to alert the community of the incident and to provide precautions to keep residents and their pets safe.​

 

Uptick In Thefts From Motor Vehicles

Recently, there were eight (8) reported auto burglaries of vehicles parked at six (6) different places of worship in the city. While services were taking place, the suspect(s) smashed windows of the vehicles and removed property. In the past week, seven vehicles from four separate businesses had their batteries stolen. The thefts occurred after-hours during the weekend when the businesses were closed.

Recently, while unloading her groceries from the trunk of her car, a woman was confronted by a man in her garage. While the woman fled into her house to call the police, the suspect stole a bicycle from her garage and attempted to flee the area. Pedestrian Struck and Killed Crossing Olive Avenue

On Sunday July 28, 2013 at 10:02 p.m., Burbank Police officers responded to the 2600 block of Olive Avenue, regarding a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision. Fire Department personnel began life saving efforts and transported the victim to Holy Cross, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

 

Police Launch Contemporary Website

The Burbank Police Department is pleased to announce the launch of its new website, www.Burbankpd.org. The website project is the culmination of almost two years of development, in an effort to provide the community with greater access to the police department.

 

Overall Crime Rate Drops By 5 Percent

Police Chief Scott LaChasse reported an overall five percent drop year-to-date in Part One crimes, which include robbery, rape, aggravated assault, burglary, and auto theft. Chief LaChasse credits the positive downward trend and significant accomplishments to the department’s committed and industrious workforce and cadre of volunteers.

Traffic Reduction

It is the goal of the Burbank Police Department to reduce the number of traffic collisions in 2013. To that end, the Burbank Police Department has initiated a traffic collision reduction plan. The objective is to combine enforcement efforts with education to make motorists aware of some of the most common causes of traffic collisions, and thereby reduce the number of collisions.

 

Burbank Animal Shelter Receives ASPCA Grant

June 19, 2013 - The BAS has received a $6,500 grant for the purchase of a pet identification tag engraving machine, ID tags and collars for newly-adopted pets.All dogs and cats adopted from the Burbank Animal Shelter (BAS) will soon be leaving with collars and a personalized pet identification tag thanks to a generous grant from the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).​

Coyotes are indigenous to the Verdugo Mountains and sightings of them in adjacent residential areas are common during this time of year. Typically, they are more active in the spring when caring for their young and in search of food and water. Coyotes are naturally fearful of humans, but they may become less apprehensive if given easy access to human food and garbage.
