Crime Statistics

Beginning in January of 2022, the Burbank Police Department transitioned to the National Incident-Based Reporting System, or NIBRS, for crime data collection and reporting.  This change was a mandate of all law enforcement agencies nationwide by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and done so with the intention of improving the overall quality, accuracy, and timeliness of crime data collection.

When used to its full potential, NIBRS identifies, with precision, when and where crime takes place, what form it takes, and the characteristics of its victims and perpetrators. Armed with such information, law enforcement can better define the resources it needs to fight crime, as well as use those resources in the most efficient and effective manner. Some benefits of NIBRS include:

  • Provides greater specificity in reporting offenses.
  • Collects more detailed information.
  • Helps give context to specific crimes problems.
  • Provides greater analytic flexibility.
