K-9 Unit

The Burbank Police Department’s K-9 Unit was established in 1980. The K-9 Unit is currently comprised of a Lieutenant and Sergeant, who supervise the two officers/handlers and their canine partners. The K-9 unit is an effective crime deterrent that enhances our patrol bureau with article, vehicle, and building searches.

The Department currently has one canine named Rosco.  He is a Belgian Malinois and is assigned to a canine handler.  A K9 handler is provided with a vehicle that is outfitted to transport the dog and their necessary equipment during their patrol duties.

Police dogs are trained to search for hidden, fleeing suspects as well as evidence dropped or hidden by suspects. 

K-9 handlers are assigned to our Patrol Bureau and typically work mid-day to late evening shifts to accommodate the highest amount of their calls for service. Due to the extensive training required for the handlers and their canine partners, Wednesday is a dedicated training day. Although the K-9 officers have assigned shifts and specific work hours, they are on-call 24-hours a day.

The K-9 Unit is also assigned to the SWAT team and assists with tactical searches for suspects.

In addition to their primary patrol duties, the handlers and their canine partners promote positive public relations within the Burbank community. The K-9 handlers conduct search demonstrations and presentations at local schools, churches, and social clubs in an effort to inform the community about the program and promote the effectiveness of the K-9 Unit.
