July 7, 2023 UPDATE: 4:12 PM The police investigation on the Burbank Overpass is concluding. The Interstate 5 freeway will be re-opened momentarily. The Burbank Boulevard overpass will be re-opened as soon as emergency vehicles and equipment have cleared.

Location: Burbank Boulevard Overpass

 

At about 1:30 PM this afternoon, Burbank Police and Fire Departments responded to the Burbank Boulevard overpass following a call from a passerby reporting an unattended backpack that was emitting smoke. Police officers arrived and found the backpack on the south sidewalk of Burbank Boulevard, near the northbound I-5 freeway off-ramp. Officers saw that the backpack was in fact emitting what appeared to be smoke.

 

Due to the suspicious nature of the item, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson and Explosives Detail is responding.

 

As a precaution and in the interest of public safety, the northbound Interstate 5 freeway has been closed in the area with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol.

 

We understand this is a busy time of day for commuters.  The Burbank Police Department is working with the Sheriff’s Department to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion as quickly as possible.
