July 19, 2022 12:00 PM
On July 19, 2022, at about 12:20 a.m., the Burbank Police Department responded to the 400 block of East Palm Avenue regarding reports of a male attempting to force his way into a home via the front door.
When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim, who said he saw the suspect at his front door manipulating the screen, ultimately defeating the lock, and then tried to force the front door open. The homeowner used his bodyweight to hold the front door closed while calling the police. The suspect was able to wedge an object in the door to prevent it from closing all the way; however, he fled just prior to officers’ arrival.
Officers established a perimeter around the location and found the suspect a short distance away. The suspect initially tried to run from officers; however, he was captured and taken into custody without further incident.
The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Phillip Hillmendoza, a transient. He was placed under arrest and booked for residential burglary, a felony. Mr. Hillmendoza is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond and is due to appear in court on July 21, 2022. Formal charges are pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
