Weather/Fire Alert - Local Update

December 6, 2017 07:30 AM

>>MORNING UPDATE - 7:3O A.M. [CREEK FIRE]>>

The wind-driven Creek Fire continues to burn in the hills near Sylmar and Sunland-Tujunga. At this time, there are NO evacuation orders in the City of Burbank.

For evacuation and emergency shelter information related to the Creek Fire, click here: http://bit.ly/2ABiM8R.

AIR QUALITY ALERT:

Smoke from the Creek fire has generated poor air quality in Los Angeles County and the greater San Fernando Valley, including the City of Burbank. People are encouraged to remain indoors if possible and avoid strenuous activity or prolonged periods outdoors. This is especially important to young children, the elderly, and those with allergies and respiratory conditions like asthma.

The Burbank Police encourage residents to sign up for Nixle alerts by texting your zip code to 888-777. Also, please visit ReadyBurbank.org, which provides emergency preparedness information and allows users to register to receive Burbank Community Alerts.

Please do not call dispatch or 9-1-1 for information regarding evacuation orders or the fire. We need to keep emergency lines open.

Latest Weather Statement from the National Weather Service:

"...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM PST THIS EVENING...

...HIGH WIND WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON...

* WINDS AND TIMING...Areas of northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph can be expected through this evening. Gusts to 60 mph are possible again tonight through Thursday.

* Impacts...Winds this strong may down trees and power lines,
causing property damage or power outages. In addition, there
is the potential for blowing dust and debris, especially near
recent burn areas. Cross winds can make driving difficult,
especially for drivers of high profile vehicles and vehicles
towing trailers.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

When driving, use extra caution. Be prepared for sudden gusty
cross winds.

A High Wind Watch means that conditions are favorable for
potentially damaging winds of 58 mph or greater. Be prepared to
secure all loose outdoor furniture in advance of the onset of
strong winds. Monitor the latest forecasts on NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite media source.

///////////////////////////PREVIOUS UPDATE [12.06.17]////////////////////////////////

We are continuing to monitor activity within the City of Burbank and issues related to the wind. The local weather forecast calls for high winds continuing throughout today and into tonight, reaching gusts upwards of 45 MPH this afternoon.

The following is a statement from the National Weather Service:

"WINDS THIS STRONG WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DOWNED TREES AND POWERLINES, BLOWING DUST AND DEBRIS, AND POWER OUTAGES. VERY CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED DURING THIS PERIOD, WITH RED FLAG WARNINGS REMAINING IN EFFECT THROUGH THURSDAY. ANY FIRE IGNITIONS WILL HAVE A LIKELIHOOD OF VERY RAPID FIRE SPREAD. PLEASE MONITOR THE LATEST NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECASTS AND WARNINGS AS THIS DANGEROUS WIND EVENT CONTINUES TO UNFOLD."

Complete Forecast: http://bit.ly/2ASRj57

There is a fire burning in the Sylmar area, dubbed the "Creek Fire." We encourage those in our neighboring hillside communities to monitor local news coverage and law enforcement advisories for updates and affected areas.

Remember that air quality will be poor with blowing dust and debris, especially in our recent La Tuna Fire burn areas. The dust and debris can also inhibit a driver's ability to see while driving, so we ask everyone to be safe and slow down on the road.

We will provide updates as necessary.
